Planning: Costume

My music video will be split screen, each screen consisting of a different variation of the same man. Costume is the most important element of mise-en-scene to help distinguish between these two variations.

Character 1: Scruffy

This character shouldn't appear trendy, it should seem like he doesn't care about his appearance meaning clothing should be minimalistic. This will juxtapose the other more classy character. This character won't necessarily appeal to my target audience as its not supposed to. Hopefully though, with the juxtaposition against the classy character they will find the other character more desirable.

Grey Hoodie:

This item of clothing is quite boring and dull. A hoodie is an easy item to just throw on in the morning, and the fact that he's wearing it to town shows that he just doesn't care. I already own the hoodie so getting hold of it will not be an issue. The actor who has been cast to appear in my video is also the same size as me.

Jeans:

These jeans are not terrible, but they are far from a fashion statement. Again, they are just something you would throw on, without putting too much thought or effort into them. These jeans are very generic and won't be hard to find for not much money. However, my actor owns a pair, so there may not even be a need to buy them.

Shoes:

These trainers are something that a normal person would wear, however this particular pair will have clearly been neglected and the character doesn't care. Again, I own these trainers so there won't be any issues when it comes to finding them. This puts me at a major advantage too, because as they're old and very worn, which is perfect for my video.

The outfit all put together doesn't match and doesn't show wealth or class. When it comes to my target audience, they will respond to a more attractive person or someone who appears to make more of a effort. This is why I have decided to use a split screen to to be able to convey a more appealing character for my target audience.

Character 2: Classy

This character will be totally different. It's my intention to make him seem attractive to a female audience, and still appealing to the part of my audience which will be male.

Top:

The jumper is quite plain, but classy at the same time. It also matches the season, which will be winter. The jumper shows that this character cares about fashion and his appearance. It is owned by my actor so it won't be hard to get hold of one.

Trousers:

These jeans are fashionable and clearly have had thought put into them. They go with almost any possible top and shoe pairing which I think speaks to the character, because it indicates that he knows this and has bought the jeans for this reason. The fact that he thinks about his appearance is an important factor to make him seem attractive to my audience, which is my intention.

Shoes

These shoes are fashionable and show the character to be young and fashion conscious, which is how I want to portray this variation of my main character.
